Mickey’s Popcorn is a small-batch gourmet popcorn company founded in 2020 by husband-and-wife duo Kenny and Dr. Penny Mickey. Kenny, the “master crafter,” draws on his expertise in food manufacturing and logistics from brands like Cargill and FedEx, while Dr. Penny brings executive experience from higher education and government, along with skills in designing work-based learning programs. Notably, both once channelled their competitive college basketball spirit into launching this venture.

The brand crafts artisan popcorn flavors inspired by regional tastes and premium spirits, including innovative offerings such as Tennessee Whiskey Caramel made with Uncle Nearest Whiskey and a “Charcuterie Board” mix combining Smoked Artisanal Cheddar with that caramel.

Beyond snacks, Mickey’s Popcorn stands out as a social enterprise. Through their nonprofit arm, The GradUS Project, they provide transitional employment and on-the-job training for underserved groups like domestic violence survivors, autistic youth, and opportunity youth. This commitment extends to experiential youth programs—such as the “On and Poppin Teen Camp”—that teach entrepreneurship and culinary creativity in collaboration with partners like FedEx Cares.

Their growth story includes recognition as EDGE Business of the Year 2023, and support via a $15K loan that helped renovate a new 4,588 sq ft facility to scale production from 500 to 6,000 bags per week. They’ve also secured retail presence through branded co-productions and distribution through retailers like Kroger, Publix, Hilton Hotels, and Horseshoe Tunica—featuring their signature whiskey caramel popcorn.
